Sobering story about missing Merrimack River boater

26 06 2009

I’ve mentioned the mouth of the Merrimack is notoriously terrible with a relatively narrow channel, currents and boat traffic. This story about a missing boater further demonstrates just how dangerous the water can be, even when you’re not far off from shore and have boating experience (the missing person was a coast guard vet.) I haven’t found a ton of details – but regardless, it’s a sad tale.

Even when planning our summer goal (a circumnavigation of Plum Island) — we’ve been thinking about portaging over that tip of PI so as not to mess with that area.

Has anyone ever had experience kayaking there? Stories and details would be appreciated.
