Dolphins near Tybee Island, GA

16 04 2009

As we first were leaving for our Tybee Island kayak adventure, Shane. the kayak guy, had told us “not to worry about the dolphins.” That they might come up to our boat and be curious, but they wouldn’t tip it over or anything. “Don’t worry.” Well played, kayak man. Let me tell you — a dolphin can tip over my boat any day. People pay good money for that experience at fancy resorts…I’ll take it!

So mid-paddle, Patrick saw a dolphin fin. I did not have my glasses on – so I didn’t see it…despite freaking out and trying really hard to see it. Partial reenactment: “I think that’s a fin!” “Where? Oh my god, a dolphin? or a shark?” “Right there!” “Where?!” “There — oop – you missed it.” “AHHH! I want to see a dolphin!” (multiply by about 5 – 10 minutes)

So the next day, we had to go on a dolphin tour. I’m sure the one on Tybee is great…we were headed to Savannah for the rest of our trip though, so we went with “Dolphin Adventures” who you can find on the River Walk in Savannah. They were cool. We brought daiquiris (the drink of choice on the RiverWalk). And we saw dolphins. And it was great.

Taking pictures of dolphins is not as easy as it looks. This was about the best I got. But the actual experience was so worth it!
